Good thing bears are (usually) more scared of us than we are of them.
Yesterday afternoon I took a walk from the office up Boyer Drive to do a little field work. Half way up the hill, I found the first of many bear scat piles along the road. The scat was big, red and full of apples, which made sense because there are a lot of apple trees up that way.
After I had completed most of my work, I returned to the road. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a black flash. I quickly turned and saw a bear running right towards me. I don't want to admit it as I tell everyone that I'm not afraid of bears, but I jumped way back in fright. I think the bear, which was only a small cub, had the same reaction when it saw me because it changed its course completely. The bear cub crossed the road a little further down. It stopped for half a second to take another look at me, but was gone again before I could take a picture. I immediately started by walk back to the office while constantly watching my back for more bears.
This wasn't my first encounter with bears within the past week. As you might have seen already across the Kensington Conservancy's social media pages, we had two bears cubs visit the office. Mary went outside to the picnic table beside the office but quickly came running back inside exclaiming "there's a bear outside!" Of course I went running out to see. There were two bear faces looking through the long grass and shrubs. We quickly found out they were just two cubs. We watched them roam around behind the office for a while and I tried to take some pictures, but they didn't turn out too well.
After a while, the two cubs started making their way west behind the neighbouring gas station. Tanna, Mary and I decided to go see if we could get one last good look at them and there they were, climbing one of the pine trees on the other side of the gas station. I was able to get some excellent pictures of them up there. At the point there was still no sign of their mother and we hopped she wasn't too far away for the cubs sake.
There was have many other bear sightings in the immediate area as well. The cubs were spotted again, right in Desbarats, along with their mother, so at least she's still around. A bear cub was spotted crossing the highway. A local resident has had bears coming onto his yard. If you are in the Desbarats area, make sure you keep your eyes and ears open at all times. You don't want to get caught between a mother and her cubs!
