  • 3 species of trees
  • 1 species of insect or spider
  • 4 species of birds
  • 2 species of mammals (tracks or signs count)
  • 2 species of herbaceous plant
  • 3 species of fungus, lichen, or moss
Visit www.inaturalist.org or download the iNaturalist app on your phone to get started!

Build a Bird House or Plant a Butterfly Garden

If you have the resources at home, building a nesting box for birds or planting wildflowers for the butterflies can be a fun family activity!
Some bird species found locally that use nesting boxes include:
  • Eastern Bluebird
  • Tree Swallow
  • Wood Duck
  • House Wren
  • Black-capped Chickadee

There are an abundance of butterfly species that are found in the St. Joseph Channel area. Turn your yard or garden into a sanctuary for them! All you need to do is plant native, flowering plants in sunny areas and you're bound to attract butterflies. Certain plants will attract certain butterfly species. Most people know that milkweed attracts Monarchs, but what do other butterflies prefer?

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!

This is one that you're heard before many times, but it's so true. We challenge you to come up with some creative ways to reuse items in your house that you would normally recycle or throw out. Do you turn scrap pieces of "junk" into an art project? Do you turn an old container into a bird feeder? Do you fix something that's broken so that you don't have to buy a new one? The possibilities are endless!
